Preventive Eye Care & Early Detection
Spotting changes before they affect your vision
Many eye diseases initially develop unnoticed. Changes to the retina, macula or optic nerve can already be present even though everyday vision does not yet seem impaired.
Regular ophthalmological check-ups help to identify risk factors and pathological changes as early as possible and, if necessary, treat them in good time.
Which examinations make sense depends, among other things, on your age, your refractive error, existing conditions and your family history.
Glaucoma – also known as the "green star" – often develops gradually and remains unnoticed for a long time. It can lead to progressive damage to the optic nerve.
For early detection, we assess the optic nerve and measure intraocular pressure.
If needed, the examination can be supplemented with an OCT of the optic nerve. This provides a high-resolution image of the nerve fibre layers, allowing changes to be detected early, documented, and compared at later examinations.
A regular check-up can be particularly worthwhile from the age of 40, as well as in the case of an increased personal risk, for example due to family history or stronger short-sightedness.
Retinal conditions can also develop over a longer period of time without initially causing noticeable symptoms.
Modern imaging examinations allow a precise assessment of the retina and can help make changes visible at an early stage.
Optical coherence tomography – OCT for short – provides a high-resolution image of the individual layers of the retina.
This means even subtle changes in the macula can be detected and documented.
The examination is suitable both for early detection and for monitoring the progression of various retinal diseases.
With Optomap imaging, large areas of the retina can be captured and documented in a single image.
This gives us a comprehensive overview of the retina – including areas that can be more difficult to assess with a conventional examination.
The digital image also allows for very good documentation and makes comparison at later check-ups easier.
Individually tailored preventive eye care can be particularly worthwhile if you have:
- a family history of glaucoma or retinal disease
- stronger short-sightedness
- diabetes mellitus
- high blood pressure
- increasing age
- already known changes to the optic nerve, macula or retina
- certain long-term medications
- conspicuous or follow-up-requiring prior findings
Not every examination is equally necessary for everyone.
That's why we don't see preventive eye care as a fixed standard package. We take your personal risk factors, your history and the ophthalmological findings into account, and advise you individually on which additional examinations may make sense in your case.
Our goal is to detect changes as early as possible and to preserve your eyesight in the long term.
Some examinations for extended early detection are not part of the statutory health insurance benefits catalogue and are offered as individual health services.
We will of course inform you in advance which examination is recommended and what costs will be incurred.
